Bob, here's a question for you- what is the possibility that many more good old
growth sites exist in the Northeast but which haven't been recognized by the
old growth community?

  Subject: [ENTS] Assessing the probabilities

  ENTS,

Periodically, I go through a mental exercise of ranking the big/tall trees in
Massachusetts according to a number of criteria. I seem compulsive about doing
this. I also think about determining the probability of finding a tree that
reaches a girth or height threshold. My judging eye is good enough to recognize
candidates for one list or another from fairly great distances. I'm not as good
as Will, and don't ever expect to be, but I'm good enough. As a consequence,
I've been able to develop some empirical probabilities over the last few years.
My focus has been white pines.
