Subject: [ENTS] Louisana Oaks 2

ENTS, After leaving the St. Joseph's Abbey we traveled to Baton Rouge then
turned south for Carville, La. While in B.R we passed several large Live Oaks
and stopped on Highland Rd to measure one of the larger trees that we had seen.
Growing right next to the roadway under powerlines at the Baton Rouge Symphony
Orchestra Admin Office. A huge tree that B.R. beautification commission has
deemed the Legacy Oak. CBH-24' 9", Spread-105' x 96' and Height-65'. A trunk
photo and a crown photo.
After much pleasure at the ole Oak we departed for our next stop, the old State
Hospital for Leprosy in Carville along the Great River Foad. Now known as the
National Hansen's Disease Center. After a 25 mile drive south we turned onto
river road hwy 141 or state rd 75. Old Plantation fields flank the roadway
along with industrial development. About a mile before we reached the center we
spied a Huge Lone Live Oak south of the rodeway about 200 yards. It had
obviously been left from an earlier time when trees would have been bountiful
here. Wow! What a tree, it was surrounded by a wrought iron fence with
manicured grown. A small arranged group of head stones flanked the western edge
of the tree. Most dating recently.

This is on of the coolest oaks I've done, with a face like appearance with a
somber expression! And to top that off there were Honey Bees in a huge cavity
inside the wonderous tree. Named, you guessed it the Lone Oak. From my
experience with Bees I could tell they have been living in this tree for years.
Way cool! CBH-25' 11", Spread-126' x 112.5' and Height-60'. Some photos of this
great centinal! Part 3, the Hansen's Disease Center will come later. Larry
