Subject: our roots: Old Growth Demonstration in West Orange, NJ -- Oct. 29, 2009

Friends --

I write to share with you a struggle presently underway in the town of West
Orange, New Jersey. 40 of 45 acres of EASTERN OLD GROWTH FOREST are threatened
with destruction at the will of decision-makers within Seton Hall Preparatory
Academy -- whose vision for the land features a rise in esteem held for their
athletic program. This is ancient forest in the bioregion -- some of the trees
alive before the United States even declared independence -- that lives on the
first ridge of the Atlantic Coast, west of New York City.

Presently, Seton Hall & the West Orange Zoning Board are preparing for their
ninth meeting (of eleven total) to mediate zoning variance disputes. Quiet on
the agenda, if there at all, is talk of the trees or the forest. There is no
language in the zoning code of West Orange that protects the forest -- and
therefore talk is of parking, noise, and setbacks.

I here promote: deafening, quiet support of these trees at the next zoning
board meeting -- Oct. 29, 2009 @ 8:00 pm. Let us pack the hall with our
smiling faces. (66 Main Street, West Orange Town Hall -- park in rear of
building -- or ride transit to within a 12 minute walk). Below is a map link.

To visit the forest itself (perhaps before the zoning board meeting): it lives
beside Prospect Ave., between Northfield and Mt. Pleasant. Below is another
map link. (Also reachable by transit from NYC to within a 10 minute walk)

Attached, is a flyer for your information & WIDE distribution (maybe you have
friends & family nearby).

Thank you.
