That really is an amazing photo stitch!  I just returned from Big Sur, which is
the southern extent of the coastal redwoods.  They're nowhere near as big as
those in NorCal, but impressive none-the-less.  In one isolated cove perched on
the side of the Santa Lucia Mountains we saw numerous trees near 8-10 feet in
diameter.  I also noticed some interesting fresh new growth on some giant
redwoods following the big fire they had last year.  They looked like
oversized blackened telephone poles with bright green epicormic growth from the
ground to the crown.  I'll send out some pix when I return from vacation in a
few days.

I also attempted to find the "southernmost redwood" mentioned in the NatGeo
article.  I believe that grove is in the Soda Spring drainage, but having
limited time today I wasn't able to find any redwoods in that particular
canyon.  I imagine they are higher up where the canyon begins to narrow and
thus provide much more shade.

Any ENTS traveling to California, I HIGHLY recommend visiting Big Sur!!

Don,

Yes I have.  My sister hit the nail on the head when she said it was like
"where's Waldo" looking for how many people where in the tree (We counted 5).
