Beth,

The American Chestnut Foundation will likely want a sample of the tree for
analysis. I believe they prefer a 4-6" twig with green leaves but a bur
with nuts is probably just as well. If your tree is producing nuts the
A.C.F. will probably ask you to send them some. I'll be looking forward to
some photos and measurements when you have a chance.

I found an American chestnut on 9/26/09 while driving down a country road in
Glenmore Pa. There were two sprouts, likely from an old stump, that are
approximately 2' in circumference. I did get a height measurement of 50.3'
for the taller one. There were no nuts or burs to be found.

George

P.S. How was the wine?

Subject: [ENTS] Possible Chestnut Tree

Hey Fellow ENTS.

I think I found a possible chestnut tree at one of the wineries in
Augusta, Missouri. Augusta lies on the north side of the Missouri
River about 40 miles west of St. Louis. I bought home a bur and found
three dried up chestnuts inside. It had produced hundreds of burs but
if each one is like the one found... I don't know if the American
Chestnut Society knows of this possible tree. I will send them an
email after this one.

Beth

P.S. I will go back on a less busy day to take photos and
measurements, with Mount Pleasent Winery's permission of course.
