First let me thank Bob and Lee for their talks at the Agawam Senior Center last
week. Very well done. I was the one that asked about the fires in California.
Part of the
talks reminded me I had a e-mail about recent logging in Chester,MA near the
Hiram Smith/Isabelle Toogood Tomb, (there are only two such tombs known in the
U.S.). Last Sunday we drove up there to check on the report. Years ago there
was an old woods road, washed out in some places, that I could drive up to the
tomb area on. Now you would need a log skidder to get 2/3 of the way to the
tomb. I down loaded alot of pictures in my computer but I haven't been able to
post them. I may have to wait for my son to do it for me.
Today we took a tape measure up to Sofinowski Perserve
in Southwick,MA. All I could measure was their girth of some of the trees.
2 of the trees were shagbark hickory. one was 5 feet around at
4.5 feet off the ground and the second was 6 feet. The
largest tulip tree was 6.6 feet.
The largest oak had 2 trunks, one 8.6 feet and the other was 9 feet.
The trunks split apart about 5 feet off the ground. The base at 4.5 feet was 12
feet.
The
largest maple,16 feet around at about 4.5 feet, had 2 trunks living and 1
dead. The remaining leaves on the tree were very small and the tree is not
doing well.
I don't
know alot about trees yet, but by using the trees in my neighborhood that I
know date back to 1950 or so, I would say most of the trees in Sofinowski can't
be much older. Sam Goodwin
