Great work guys! I would love to contribute photos if they are of your top
ten trees.

ENTS,

Today we added another chapter to the story of Mohawk Trail
State Forest, forest icon of all Massachusetts. Andrew Joslin's name was
officially added to the ENTS list of elites who have climbed and tape drop
measured the great pines of Mohawk. My friend Tim Zelazo and Keith, a friend
of Andrew's, photographically documented the climb to tape drop measure the
Joe Norton tree, which I had listed as the 4th tallest tree in
Massachusetts. Before the tape drop measure, I remeasured Joe from the
ground and got values from 163.1 to 163.6 feet. The tape drop measurement
was 163.5 feet. So our ground-based measurements of Joe were close despite
my fears that we weren't seeing the top. More on the Joe Norton tree
tomorrow. Also, I'm looking forward to Andrew's filming. That will tell the
story best.

Tomorrow I return to Mohawk to show a Boston College graduate
student around. She is a journalism major for science and medical reporting.
She wants to do a story on ENTS and big tree hunting in New England. So
we'll show her some of the great trees, how we hunt for them, measure them,
monitor them, etc. The trees are getting well-deserved attention, but we
will be careful not to overdo it. Tim and I were discussing that very point.
Some serious thinking to do.

Andrew, again, thanks so very much. We are indebted to you,
buddy. Between Will Blozan, you, and the others who accompany Will, the
story of the great Mohawk pines is unfolding in pictures and numbers. We are
working on a display that DCR will be putting together on 10 top trees
located on DCR properties. Robert Campanile of the Western Gateway Heritage
State Park will be designing the display. Tim Zelazo, District Manager, has
opened up the photographic entries to others. I will choose the 10 trees,
take measurements of them, and develop an informational profile about each
tree. However, Tim will except photos from others. So, anyone wishing to
contribute photos needs to coordinate with me to get you to the tree or
trees. We'll then get the images to Tim by the method he prescribes.

Bob

Andrew:

I think you were in the tree for four hours. I don't know what I was doing
when you were standing in the top whorl, but the videographer said he got
it. While I was moving around the tree during the climb, I finally realized
how tall the tree is. I'm glad we all had a safe day.

Tim
