Hi Mike,

 this is an interesting finding. it actually brings the modern version
of tree-ring analysis back to its beginning. A.E. Douglas, the
scientist who brought cross-dating to the science, wanted to use tree
rings to see if there was a relationship between solar variation and
climate. As the meteorological records were too short at the time to
determine a strong relationship [early 1900s], he turned to tree rings
to extend meteorological records. So, while the study in this article
might be correct, the trees are only 50 yrs old, which suggests some
caution be thrown into the interpretation of the results.
