Jenny,

I think that it was a yellow-bellied sapsucker but don't quote me on that. It 
appears that the holes were in a row and that is what leading to believe that. 
As far as the tree is concern I think that it should be ok.  We several trees 
that have been "attack" in this manner and they seem to doing just fine.
