Joe & Bob:

Joe, I looked at your slideshow, and personally I find it makes sense.
Why to clearcut? Exactly as Bob explained it: it is straightforward
and can be easily done with heavy machinery. I think one reason (at
least in Finland) is tradition: I know many forest owners and
foresters, and lot of forest owners are very prejudiced if some new
method smells even little bit of nature protection.

And yes, in central Europe, like in Germany where I now live,
selective logging is used widely in broadleaf forests. It suits
particularly well for beech (Fagus sylvatica) which is very shade
tolerant and grows well in very small openings. Still, multi species
forests cannot be seen very much, and conifer forests are usually
clearcutted also here in Germany.
