The ironwood tree was larger than any other ironwood I've seen and it was tall. Most of them I see are about the size of a 3" to 6" post, and they are easily distinguished from other trees by its bark, which has a "shreddy" appearance and is broken into small, shaggy plates which curve away from the truck. Hornbeam has smooth bark and a twisted, fluted trunk, dark bluish gray in color. I've heard many people call them bluebeech or muscle wood. American hornbeam is usually regarded as a "weed tree" because of its small size and poor form.
