Andrew, ENTS, The only viable solution I can see was proposed by Bob Leverett some time ago and met with much opposition. That would be break the ENTS list down to two or more separate topic oriented sub-lists. People could subscribe to all of them or to just the ones they found of interest, or more likely just choose to receive emails from the ones of interest and view the others from the website only. There are certainly downsides to this. People would need to post to the correct sub-list, and would not in most cases fully participate to all the back and forth discussions. Initially is it could be one list for trip reports, and one list for general discussions. People would need to be disciplined to put of general discussions in the trip report list and move them to the general discussion list. I really don't see that as happening.
For me personally, it has become an overwhelming amount of work just to maintain the list and the website as it is without adding another type of discussion forum to the mix. A second list would be manageable, but other than that I could not do it. The reason I volunteered to work on the website to begin with was to insure that the interesting reports would not be lost to the Aether but archived in some form for future reference. That is being accomplished now and must be accomplished in any future changes made to the system. A web forum where folks can post their reports might be the way to scale up the ENTS discussion without overloading mail inboxes. The downside is more configuration work and maintenance to run the forum. The ENTS googlegroups website is a decent way to interface with the list without receiving mail but I find it less than robust for following various discussion threads and embedding photographs.
