Subject: 179" black cherry

Hello-

I recently found the largest black cherry I have ever seen in over 30 years of
exploring the Southern Appalachians, and I’m wondering if it might be a
champion for the state (the data base for which I could not access), or perhaps
for Nantahala National Forest. The circumference I measured at 179 inches, and
this is a very tall, single-trunked tree in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. I
was not able to measure crown spread or height at the time. The tree is not
visible from the trail, and is located at roughly 4,000 ft. above sea level
near Little Santeetlah Creek. I do not live nearby, but I will be more than
happy to provide more information to someone who may be interested in visiting
the tree to take the measurements. See attached images. The day pack in the
image is about 18” tall.
