Glad you like it, great tree for a bark park. No, I don't think Parrotia is a typical candidate for coppicing. Nursery workers often coppice various Birches, e.g. nigra, papyrifera, in order to stimulate multiple trunks, for that natural colony look.

To: [email protected] Date: Monday, November 16, 2009, 12:25 PM A beautiful tree! Reading about it - native of northern Iran. Called "Persian Ironwood", in the Hammamelidaceae family. Grows 20 - 40 ft in height, spread is 20 -30 (info from Missouri Botanical Garden site) Kew Gardens website: "This small tree from the hills of Iran has almost indestructible wood and an unbeatable array of autumn leaf colours. As an ornamental plant it is virtually unrivalled and is relatively common in British gardens." Here are 3 pix. The flowers, the stems (hey, is it likely that this tree was coppiced? a new word for me I'm trying to understand), and the foliage. Thanks for this tree which: "Ombra mai fu di vegetabile". It's worth falling in love with. I'd use it for the set. Or, if there is this wacky aria about a Persian Prince feeling romantic love for a tree (part of translation: 'Be my vegetative umbrella'...which is funny), what kind of tree might it be? Parrotia persica, of course. A very fine vegetative umbrella. --- On Mon, 11/16/09, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [ENTS] Forests/Trees in opera (go ahead and delete...) To: [email protected] Date: Monday, November 16, 2009, 11:34 AM Ed, Didn't really expect anyone to add to the opera stuff. Only thought that knowing how much forests/trees are mentioned and sung about in opera might be of interest in general to ENTS. Like, how many ENTS knew that there was an opera based on Handel and Gretel? And how cool would it be if ENTS designed a set for it? Or, if there is this wacky aria about a Persian Prince feeling romantic love for a tree (part of translation: 'Be my vegetative umbrella'...which is funny), what kind of tree might it be? And if Joan of Arc sings a devastating aria saying goodbye to a forest before she is burned at the stake, I think people who care deeply about forests and trees would be as moved by this as they would be by parts of the Muir American Forests essay. (And how great is it that the link to the clip has an African-American woman from the southern US singing an aria in French about a French martyr written by a Russian composer????!!!!) If nothing else, I thought that the pic of me with the dead deer from a Handel production might be of interest or at least amusing.....alas....not! Steve mentioned a great van morrison song, which I appreciated a lot. That was worth the whole post. (and over rode the feelings of guilt I had when realizing how many annoyed ENTS were having to delete yet one more discussion email that didn't interest them! eeks! they have to do this for this post too! ha!) Jenny, We have had some discussions before about mentions of trees or forests in songs, but I am not familiar with much of the opera scene and can't really add anything to the discussion. I was hoping that others could.
