ENTS,

A few months ago I bought a copy of the the USDA Handbook of Agriculture 1949 -
Trees at a used book sale. It is an interesting document that includes a
variety of articles on a wide range of topics. It even includes a tree
identification guide. If you are interested in the thinking on the subject 60
years ago, a copy of the document can be found, along with many other USDA
documents at this website:

  Purpose
The repository was launched in April 2006 to provide access to the full text
of publications digitized by NAL or through NAL's partnerships. The majority of
the publications available were published by the USDA. Examples include the
Agriculture Information Bulletin, the Agricultural Economic Report, and the
Yearbook of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Publications are added on an
ongoing basis--check the Spotlights section of the home page for information on
new additions or connect to the RSS feed. A complete list of full-text
publications is provided on the Tables of Contents page.

I encourage people to check it out. One of the other handbooks available, for
example, was a Guide to Common Trees of Alaska from 1950.
