North Syracuse NY
Cemetery Oak Grove Heights

After I left the Wizard of Oz Oak Grove I walked to the 1.5
acre old growth North Syracuse Cemetery Oak Grove. I used laser range finder to
measure the following heights:

White Oak #24 24.4”
dbh 103
ft.

Red Oak #13 30.7”
dbh 96 ft.

Black Oak #27 44.3”
dbh 95 ft. this tree may have lost part of
its top since Bob Leverett’s 4/25/98 measurement of 100.5 ft. or I may

            have
missed the highest part of this largest tree in the grove’s wide crown.

White Oak #22 20.7”
dbh
98 ft.

White Oak #23 31.1”
dbh 104
ft. should be tallest tree

White Oak #14 24.6”
dbh 93 ft.

White Oak #15 25.9”
dbh 102
ft.

White Oak #16 30.7”
dbh 101
ft.

Black Gum #34 19.9”
dbh 78 ft. hollow, balding bark,

            twisting
crown

Red Oak #26 30.1”
dbh 94 ft. top regenerated after

            breaking
in July 1994 storm

This oak grove
has several trees over 200 years old and is a spectacular sight with

so many large tall gnarled oaks packed into little over an
acre. There are not enough species in the canopy for a Rucker Index.

Numbers of trees refer to 1999 brochure.

In the 2nd growth forest next to the oak grove
are several tall young White Pines –

I measured one to a height of 94 ft.; it has 2 trunks
covered with Poison Ivy.
