Jack, Pack Forest is near Warrensburg as you state and Elders Grove is near Saranac Lake, two different forests. I recall height measurements at Pack Forest for White Pine in the 140's but have not measured there recently.
Regarding Elders Grove it is in state forest perserve land and not part of Paul Smiths, contrary to what Bob said. The plot of old growth is 10-12 acres and is adjacent to Paul Smiths land. Within the last year Paul Smith College has extensively logged all of the timber right up to the property line. I suspect that Elders Grove wouldn't be there today if it had been on Paul Smiths land. The trail from the road into the old growth has been disrupted due to the logging operations. Measurement of the tallest white pine in the grove in October 2009 is 158 feet. I measured it in 2006 at 159.7 feet but have been unable to repeat that number since. The tree is not in danger of suffering from laser burn, but I have measured it two or three times per year since 2006. This forest takes the brunt of every storm and downed limbs and trees is the usually when I revisit the site. The video took me right back to being there, great job Steve!
