ENTS,
Today I used laser rangefinder to measure more trees in the old growth North
Syracuse Cemetery Oak Grove which has a deep personal association for me as I
grew up near it:
North Syracuse NY
Cemetery Oak Grove Heights
12/06/2009
I used laser rangefinder to measure more heights in the 1.5
acre old growth North Syracuse Cemetery Oak Grove:
White Oak #33 38”
dbh 89 ft.
Black Oak #27 44.3”
dbh 99 ft. revised from 11/21
White Oak #25 23”
dbh 104.5
ft. – this is almost definitely the tallest tree in the grove;
until I
carefully studied its crown today I thought this
tree was suppressed due to its being wedged between Trees #23 and 26
that
have larger trunks and its leaning trunk made #25 look lower but study
of
its canopy revealed that it is indeed lofty.
White Oak #19 33.7”
dbh
96 ft.
White Oak #21 30”
dbh 90 ft.
White Oaks #31 +
32 26”
+ 23” dbh 90 ft. seems to be highest part of
both
trees – these 2 are joined together but are 2 separate trees – one turns
deep
purple in autumn, the other orange-bronze
Trees # 19, 21,
31, 32, and 33, which are outside the tall dense core of forest-grown oaks,
have more open grown form. The core of tall forest-grown oaks consists of Trees
#13, 14, 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27. The canopies of these trees fill
the sky high above with ancient crooked timber.
Numbers of
trees refer to 1999 brochure.
In the 2nd growth forest next to the oak grove I
measured the largest Sassafras (20.6” dbh) to a height of 63 ft. and another
young double-trunked White Pine
to 90 ft.
