these trees became more and more unusual the closer we went to the ocean.  That 
is they became more and more horizontal rather than vertical...Or as Randy 
suggests, more kraken-like!  I love this crazy growth.  I've seen some pictures 
of white oaks (Q. alba) from near the coast here in Massachusetts that had a 
somewhat similar, more horizontal form.  I'd like to see some of these too and 
they're practically in my backyard!
