Wow. I thought it couldn't be based on the way they were growing, but we've 
seen how the French can prune a poodle...so why not work some shear magic on a 
London plane tree????

Jenny,

They look like London plane to me.  London plane is a widely planted
hybrid of sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and P. orientalis.  They
generally look like sycamore, but have more yellow in they young bark
and often have a more compact crown.
