Don,

Certainly our assumptions are not beyond question. However, I feel the
repeatability of the lasers has been adequately demonstrated by Bob's
innumerable tests. A series done to the requirements of publication in a peer
reviewed journal would require an enormous commitment of time and effort
especially since it is all volunteered time and effort away from the focus of
actually measuring trees. If a funding was available I would say go for it. I
also do not know where such an article would or could be published. I will
admit a lack of vigorous testing on the subject, but my own rough experiments
have matched the situation as I described it in the previous post. If someone
wants to take on the task, I will support the effort and would be interested in
the results, but for now I don't see this as a priority for the group. I have
no reason to think the results will be any different that what I have observed
so far. There are more detailed specs available on the laser system - I have
seen them, but I can't find them at the moment.
