Eli,

Thanks for the post. Jess has reported on this site in the past. I don't
remember what he found. But glad to see the new data and RHI. The tuliptree
heights are to be expected. It would be interesting for us to tally all the
sites surveyed by Ents where tulips over 150 have been confirmed. The 100 ft
Quercus stellata is most impressive. But then so is the 140-foot northern red
and 138-foot white oak. I was surprised not to see Quercus falcata.

Subject: [ENTS] OG Fernbank Forest trip report (Atlanta, GA)- DATA included!

oops... here's the data....

Some of you (Jess Riddle in particular) may know about the 67 acre parcel of
old growth in the city limits of Atlanta known as Fernbank Forest. I happen to
work at Fernbank Museum and have had the opportunity to do more exploring in
our forest as of late with my newly acquired laser rangefinder. Here's brief
report from my 7 hour excursion last friday and note that all height
measurements are NLT from laser shots straight up into the canopy for this
preliminary forest trip:

Liriodendron tulipifera 153'
Liriodendron tulipifera 151.5' x 10.5' CBH
Liriodendron tulipifera 150' x 11.0'
Liriodendron tulipifera 144' x 12.3'
Liriodendron tulipifera 142.5 x 12.9'
Liriodendron tulipifera 138' x 13'
Liriodendron tulipifera 144' x 13.75'
Fraxinus americana 116' x 8.75'
Acer saccharinum 100' x 14.8' CBH (2 trunks?)
Fagus grandifolia 114' x 8.3'
Liquidambar styraciflua 126'
Pinus echinata 123' x 6.71'
Pinus Taeda 142' x 9.0'
Pinus Taeda 138' x 9.42'
Quercus alba 138'
Quercus rubra 140'
Quercus stellata 100'
Tsuga canadensis 99' (this was probably planted)
Prunus serotina 108' x 7.58'
-------------------------------------------
Rucker (10) index = 127'
