All,

I saw this tree in winter, and there are no twigs within 60' of the
ground.  If leaves are available, I agree the trees are fairly easy to
separate.  In addition to the features already mentioned, black maple
leaves often have hairs along the main veins, which is rare but can
occur in sugar maple, and they have persistent stipules.  Droopiness,
thickness, and hairiness are all difficult to judge from fallen,
withered leaves; hence, I was hoping someone could make a definitive
ID from the bark.

I'm not certain, but I believe the soils where the tree grows are deep
loam over dolomite.  In central NY, black maple often occurs on thin
limestone soils, but can also occur in deeper soils.
