Steve,

We're truly honored. And, you bet, we're going to visit our trees. That's a
promise. Besides, Ohio has lots of way cool to super cool to wicked cool spots.
The rich areas of the Mid-west should have lots of hidden, undocumented big
tree pockets to explore. They may not be individually large, but I bet there
are lots of them.

It is interesting that you chose the tuliptree for me. That is my other
favorite eastern species. I have always been an unabashed tuliptree fan. It is
the great tree of the southern Appalachian coves where I grew up. Monica will
be very pleased also. She loves the American beech (as do we all) and her beech
exceeds any we've measured for height farther to the East.

What is especially nice about the tuliptree is that it joins the ranks of the
12 x 160s as our only member that is not a white pine growing at 41 degrees
north latitude or higher. Lee has a white pine in that club in Wisconsin on the
Menominee Reservation. PA has two white pines that are members of the club
(Seneca Pine and Cook Pine). Formerly PA had 3. Massachusetts has one (Tecumseh
at 12.0 x 164.4). I expect there are a few more in the 12 x 160 club within the
northeastern and mid-western regions at 41 degrees latitude and higher.

Beech

ENTS-

Seeing the discussion regarding naming trees, and that Bob has refrained from
naming a tree for himself, I thought it fitting to name a tree in his honor,
and another in Monica's honor---not white pines mind you, since they are few
and far between where I live, but these are still very nice trees. Bob's
Tuliptree, 162.6' tall and 14' 8.5'' in girth at more than 41 degrees N, is the
epitome of a southern gentleman that feels at home in the North; Monica's
Beech, at 132' tall and 5' in girth, is a slender northern beauty within view
of Bob's Tuliptree---a nice couple.

Bob and Monica--you know this means that someday you'll have to visit your
namesakes in Ohio, at Sand Run ;).
