Bob, I really appreciate the way you like the tree names. The trees got their names 7 - 10 years ago, and they were named by the Oak Grove Club of North Syracuse Junior High School, the school next to the grove. This club, unfortunately, no longer exists but the school district is committed to preserving the grove. The students came up with the names and Robert Henry and I decided which trees the names should go to, and Robert put plaques on the trees we chose - the plaques are still there today but 2 of the trees have died - the Jackie Robinson Black Oak (which also fell over) and the Disney Black Oak. The Anne Frank Black Gum continues to thrive with its crown growing more complex every year - it is most likely the oldest tree in the grove and its resilient spirit represents the undying spirit of Anne Frank. The largest Black Oak in the grove was dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe at the suggestion of one of the students in the Oak Grove Club. The Wizard of Oz Oak grove also has a new sign at the trail entrance, the sign placed there in Oct. 2009 to replace the older sign which was stolen in 2007 (and which still has not been found despite the theft being on all the local media). The Wizard of Oz Oak grove looks secure but the other old growth groves in the northern suburbs of Syracuse have an uncertain status. One person who was formerly in a high position locally said that the grove had already been cut down after its lumber was sold - this was in 2008, but the grove is still standing today and has not been touched, and I don't know if the lumber was sold. The Liverpool School Maple Grove belongs to the Liverpool School District but they have shown no interest in it for years, so its preservation status is uncertain. It will be a terrible unrecoverable tragedy if any of these priceless groves are lost to the foolish greedy mentality that is so prevalent in this part of New York State.
