Dale, ENTS
Montpelier is well known to ENTS. Will Blozan and I visited the
James Madison estate in May 2000 and Will has returned sense. I think
he measured a tulip to 168 feet. I don't have my data in front of me,
but that was our tallest VA tree per ENTS.
Yesterday Monica and I visited the old growth and mature second
growth forest. This time I could see the tops of the tall tulips
perfectly. The snow highlighted their bases. Everything was set for
measuring with a serious inent. I started at the beginning of the
forest trail. It follows a ravine. The tulips are towering. Will and I
measured tulips. Will got one to 158 feet and some change. He returned
to measure one to 168.
I will return on Wednesday, but on Sunday, I was able to
confirm the following: 158.5, 153.5, 153.8, 160.7, 159.7, and 169.3..
I roughed out a couple other tulips to 150 feet. I didn't spend more
time because it was nearing closing time for ontpelierA big tulip near
the visitor center measures 142.5 feet. It's a double, but an
impressive double- 21.5 feet around. It is hardly noticed.
The 169.3 footer is a respectible 13.7 feet around. There
are a half dozen in the 14 foot girth class. It is worth seeing.
