Larry,

Do you ever float-test your oak acorns, or do you plant what you gather and
take the "wait and see" approach?

Subject: [ENTS] Live Oaks

ENTS, On the way back from the Pascagoula River Mgt. Area today. I stopped by
Vancleave, Ms., a small city north of the coast 10 miles. I couldn't go to
the river since it is well past flood stage making it impossible to measure the
trees accurately. Maybe later this winter when the water receeds on my quest
to measure some big Cypress.
Mr. Davis a lifelong resident of Vancleave has some average sized Live Oaks in
the front part of his property and I've been wanting to stop in an measure them
for some time. He and his wife were very hospitable. Both in their late 70's,
they really enjoyed learning what I've been doing with the Live Oaks and asked
that I stop by again anytime. Mr. and Mrs. Davis told me of an old Gristmill up
river road.
                                                             The Sims Gristmill
is still working and dates from the civil war, another adventure for me at a
later date! The 5 Live Oaks in the Davis yard were all planted about 150 years
ago. The sixth one was killed by lightning a few years back. I measured the 3
biggest trees, although they are small by my standards they still are
beautiful. CBH-16', 15', 14' 9", Heights-58', 57.9', and 57.3', Spreads-
100.5' x 75', 111' x 93' and 99' x 99'. It really fasinated me that all three
trees had heights within 10" or so that is cool! A couple of photos. Oh yeah, I
picked up 10 Live Oak acorns and planted them in my treebox. Larry
