Larry,

This is a neat "nursery" you have along the carport! I get my potted-nursery
going and then relocate and end up giving my seedlings away to friends,
neighbors and anyone else who may be interested! I have found that
float-testing seed from many species is very reliable towards germination rate.
I have ran the test on dogwood, southern magnolia and oaks to name a few; and
have even planted the "floaters" separately just to see. The "floaters" never
germinated while all the "sinkers" did. Of course, acorns with a protruding
radicle are pretty good indicators of germination reliability too!!

Subject: [ENTS] Steve Re-Acorns

Steve, I usually gather full acorns and have a great sucess rate. I'm getting
better with nut selection. I've been doing this for years. All of the acorns I
gathered yesterday were already starting to germinate. I have about 10 longleaf
pine sprouting. 10 white oak, 10 cypress, 10 swampchestnut, 10 pinoak, from
Wis., ( they didn't seem full but we'll see), 10 gree ash, and 10 live oak
germinating naturally in my treebox. I have 60 trees growing in pots from the
last 2 seasons, and 5 white pine that I dug up from Wis. I should start a new
forest, I'll name it the Eastern Native Tree Society Natural Preserve.
Attaching some photos, the first are the trees in pots and the next are LL in
the box sprouting with a cypress waiting to sprout. All of the acorns are
covered in leaves just like on the Forest floor.
