Jenny, In addition, I thought I read sometime ago that deforestation on the scale of what's happening to the rainforests ultimately causes desertification. The area will become a desert and will never, ever be the same. I also read, or thought I read, that the rainforests cannot grow back up again once cut, even if left alone. It's all very sad.

I started a soil science class yesterday and learned that not only does the cutting down of trees in rainforests take away habitats and essential CO2 absorbing organisms, but the soils become depleted of organic matter even more quickly if there is more exposure to the rain and less accumulation of organic matter. It's pretty damn depressing. So much is destroyed. I know this is common knowledge, but it just shocks me every time I think about our species' ability to destroy nature.
