ENTS,
Here in North Syracuse Norway Spruce is one of the most commonly planted trees
but nowhere is it very tall, possibly to a little over 90 ft. only. They are
beautiful trees, and the oldest could be over 130 years old, and the largest
are over 3 ft. dbh.
I'm familiar with much larger NS in Cazenovia and Clinton. Cazenovia is in the
hills of Madison County 25 miles southeast of here, and at Lorenzo State
Historic Site is (or was? it's been many years since I've been there) the
largest Spruce of any species I've ever seen - it stands in a lawn and is
clothed with branches all the way to the ground - a plaque(?) said the tree was
planted in 1845, and it was probably about 80 ft. tall but utterly massive. At
or near Hamilton College in Clinton in Oneida County about 50 miles east of
here I saw a Norway Spruce towering above all other trees; this was back in
2003 and at that time or earlier the AFA national champion Norway Spruce stood
there - I think this was the tree and AFA said it was 120 ft. tall - it looked
every bit that tall.
