Dale,
The 5/16th inch growth rings for the N. red oak and its growth achievement is impressive. N. red oak is truly a growing machine. No wonder the timber community likes it. Afterwards, I met with their education staff to give them a brief tour of some of their bigger trees at their newly acquired Erie Bluffs State Park (previous trips known as the Coho Property): http://www.nativetreesociety.org/fieldtrips/penna/coho_property.htm First off, I wanted to measure a couple of the new features they erected at the Tom Ridge Education Center (TREC). You see one of two things when you first come into this new 10's of millions of dollars facility built on an old drive-in theater... their observation tower, and their windmill. The windmill stands at 122.1ft and the observation tower at 100.5'. Sorry, just had to measure them... After the meeting, we went out to Erie Bluffs and re-measured a couple of the larger trees there. I normally wouldn't even bother to mention this slight data update, but I thought you might be interested in the re-measures after our recent discussion on tree sizes and the amount of time it takes for certain species to reach large dimensions. The first tree was the largest tuliptree I've found on site. I first measured it on 9/16/03 to 14.7ft CBH x 111.1+ft high. It was 15.1ft CBH x 114.1+ft high on 7/28/09. That's 0.4ft in circumference or 1.5" in diameter of growth in almost 6 years, averaging about 1/8th"/growth ring in 6 years. The second tree was the largest N. red oak I've found on site. I first measured it on 1/23/04 to 13.5ft CBH x 106.9ft high. It was 14.4ft CBH x 111.1+ft high on 7/28/09. That's 0.9ft circumference or 3.4" in diameter of growth in about 5.5 years, averaging about 5/16"/growth ring in 5.5 years. The tuliptree is growing near the edge of a cornfield. The large red oak due north of the fat tulip, but is in the woods off the field a good couple hundred yards.
