WATER LILIES ABSORB HEAVY METALS

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Department of
Agricultural Botany have found that water lilies are capable of
absorbing great quantities of heavy, poisonous metals through their
leaves and roots. A pilot operation at the Haifa municipal wastewater
treatment plant showed that water lilies produced a marked reduction of
the amount of cadmium in the sludge. Other experiments with industrial
sludge also showed promising results in removing heavy metals such as
mercury, nickel and cobalt. Research is continuing to improve and
optimize the purification techniques.
