>BIOSKETCH
>I'am a member of the French Society of Primatology (SFDP), President of the
>Etho-Passion Society (French Society of Conservation) and Director of the
>Kalaweit program (Kalimantan Gibbons Conservation Program) in Borneo,
>Indonesia. My organization works with the local communities and
>international conservation agencies, for the protection of the equatorial
>rain-forest and the anthropoids (gibbons -Hylobates agilis and Hylobates
>muelleri-; orang-utan -Pongo pygmaeus-) in the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya
>National Park. The Kalaweit program is a new conservation program
(Signature
>of the Memorandum of Understanding between Etho-Passion and the Ministry of
>Forestry and Estate Crops of the Republic of Indonesia -1999-)
>
>THE KALAWEIT PROGRAM
>The Kalaweit Research Station, of the French Society of Conservation
>Etho-Passion, will be ready to welcome researchers next year. (First
>arrivals may be possible in April 2000.) The research station's setting is
>the primary equatorial rain-forest of the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National
>Park, in Borneo. The station's main goal is to coordinate conservation
>activities. These activities entail the management of the following
programs:
>the Gibbon Rehabilitation Program, the Conservation Education Program, and
>the sensibilization of local communities. The Kalaweit Research Station is
>ideal for in situ research in primatology, ethology, behavioral ecology,
>botany, and the like. Research activities will be a complement to the
>conservation program and will provide it with an autonomous financial
>resource. Researchers will be required to give a small monthly fee. The
>amount of the fee will be: $200 US for foreign researchers and $100 US for
>Indonesian researchers.
>
>RESEARCH FEE
>This small fee will cover certain types of assistance by Etho-Passion:
>-Help in approaching local authorities in order to obtain a short-term visa
>and research permit(this should be done at least 3 or 5 months before the
>actual arrival in Indonesia).
>-Transportation from the city airport to the station (2 and 1/2 days) and
>within the center (by boat).
>-Food and accommodations while in transit to the station (throughout
various
>villages) will be furnished by Etho-Passion.
>-Occasionnal forest assistance.
>-Occasionnal assistance in communicating with the local communities
>(Indonesian and Dayaks languages).
>Accommodations:
>-One very simple room for 2 researchers, including two beds, two desks, one
>typewriter, several oil lamps (no electricity), pens, paper, etc.
>-Rustic shower and toilet facilities.
>-Cooking will be taken care of by the station (local foods include: rice,
>fish, manioc, fruit, etc.).
>Some potential research subjects may be available (due to our various
>conservation activities):
>-Several young quarantined gibbons (Hylobates muelleri), who belong to the
>rehabilitation program.
>-Removal of biological samples (such as blood or hair) may be possible for
>genetic or immunological research, with a possibility of exporting these
>samples with a CITES Import/Export permit.
>
>OBLIGATIONS OF SCIENTIFIC VISITORS
>-Respect and favor friendly relations with the local populations.
>-Quote the Kalaweit Research Station in scientific publications, reports,
>etc.
>-Pay their participation fee before their arrival upon the station. Note:
>The full amount of the research fee will go towards financing the Kalaweit

>THE NATIONAL PARK
>The Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park (181.090 h.) is situated in the
>Bornean provinces of West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. The park was
not
>affected by the 1997/98 fires. Its primary equatorial rain-forest can be
>rather interesting from a scientific point of view (tropical forest
>ecosystems which border rivers and mountains). The Bukit Raya mountain is
>the tallest in Kalimantan, measuring in at 2278 m. A vulnerable population
>of orang-utans live around this moutain. The BB BR National Park has been
>protected by Indonesian law since 1992.
