I think the 420EX ahas a GN of 138 which is the same
as the 380EX flash.
The slave capability is some thing to consider. This
is a great feature if you plan to buy he 550EX or the
IR controler.
IMHO swivel is rather over rated. I never use it on
my camera. Use the flash bracket instead then tilt to
bouce the light as you would swive the flash head.
A flash mounted on the hot shoe, in the vertical
shooting orientation, makes the camera somewhat
unbalanced and harder to hold steady. Just MHO.
If you can afford the 550EX, go for it. If not I
would take another look at a used inexpensive 380EX
flash. for wait a bit for the 420EX price to drop.
Don't forget the 550EX when first came out costs $500,
now it's around $380.
