The battery grip can hold two of the Canon Lithium ION batteries rather than
the usual one that the camera can hold. When using the battery grip, it
will depleat battery 1 until it is nearly dead, then it will automatically
switch to battery 2 and start using it. The grip also has the standard
controls on it to use in vertial (portrait) mode.

The Canon batteries are said to be good for approx 700 photo's in standard
conditions (personally I don't get anywhere near that but I have been using
a lot of flash). If you're going to use it on location all day and take a
lot of pictures, or find the D30 is a little too small to handle, then I'd
suggest splashing out the extra money for the battery grip. BG-ED3 adds
extra weight to the camera and gives you better handling if you have large
hands.
