Yes, I noticed this also - and I have an average sized thumb. Try setting 
Custom
Function 11 to 2. This moves AF selection to the Main Dial (for horizontal AF 
points) and
the QC Dial (for vertical AF points). CF 11-2 is not as intuitive as the 
arrows, but may be
more useful for YOU. If all else fails, try CF 14 (stand on your thumb until 
it's compressed to the 
proper length : 8 )

Set Custom Function 12 to 0. When set to 0 and you press the AF Selector
( the ::: button) all seven AF points will light up. If CF 12 is set to 1, 
the AF
selection point defaults to the Center AF point only.

FYI - so far the 35 zone Evaluative Metering has worked great for me. It 
seems to handle
backlighting pretty well also.
