I've also been using the 28-135 IS almost since it first came out. I've
mainly used it on an Elan II and EOS-1V. I've seen a few posts on various
EOS-related newsgroups regarding a vibration. This fall while shooting fall
foliage with the 1V I experienced the vibration you described for the first
time. It really gets your attention as you can feel it in your hand. I took
my finger off the shutter and recomposed the shot and everything worked
fine.
I noticed a few moments later that I had a low-battery indicator on my 1V. I
changed the battery shortly thereafter. I have since shot about 50 rolls of
film with the 28-135 used a large portion of the time and have not
experienced the vibration again. I'm in no hurry to send it back for
repair.
Can't say if the lens is easily broken. I've certainly not been overly
careful with mine. It has survived quite a few birding trips to Florida and
seems to get it's share of bumps and jolts.
