Most aspects related to using DOEs improve when looking at IR systems. The
gratings are larger and easier to fabricate or replicate. The bandwidths
tend to be smaller. And alternative optical materials are much harder to
find.
DOE are (fairly) routinely used in military IR optics where size and weight
are of concern. Just as in Canon's lens, the number of optical elements are
usually reduced.
