Simple:  they can not.
The angle is a funtion of focal length (the real one not the thick-o
version).

The feature I thought would be to blame was the excess light bouncing
around inside and contributing to flare (because the image circle is
MUCH too big for the poxy little CCD chips of today's sensors.
Unless it contributes to the image excess light is never helpful.

However, unless development has come to a halt we have to hope for
bigger sensors again: If they are really on the way then downsizing
lenses is a short term fix.

Oh, and then we have to hope for even bigger cheaper memory to store
all the darned images on a long trip.
