Fred,
You are exactly right about never being able to, in good consience, use a non-L zoom
lens after purchasing your first. Last June I bought the 28-70 2.8L and was astunded.
I took another plunge for the 70-200 2.8L. Every time I see the portraits I too with
it, I thank myself for just going for it. L lenses are worth every penny you spend on
them.

somebody told that once use one L lens you can4t use other.
