If you are looking for a very soft focus affect that works quite well for
portraits, I would suggest the Carl Zeiss "Softar 1" which is sold through
B+H.  This filter renders very pleasing images that subjects like but does
not produce that "fog" or "fuzzy"  look.  In fact, it is even difficult to
tell that you used a filter at all.

The Ziess filter is expensive but with step-up adapter rings you could use
it with many lens.  BTW, this filter is available from B&H and I'm sure
other quality supply houses.
