Apart from the fact that it's slightly more powerful
(1/2 stop or so) the 550EX provides more creative
control, with built in flash exposure compensation,
strobe capability, rear curtain sync, manual power
output control & manual zoom head control. These are
controlled via a back lit LCD panel not present on the
420EX. It also has the ability to be a master for
wireless remote flash. Both can act as a wireless
remote slave. It also has a built in wide adapter to
cover 17mm lenses.
The 420EX, on the other hand is lighter, smaller and
quite a lot cheaper. Depending on the camera body
you're using, some of the above features are available
on the body anyway (FEC & rear sync). You'll be able
to cover 17mm (and even wider) on the 420EX when
Sto-Fen release an omni-bounce to suit (US$20).
Both are very well built and have an auto zoom tilt
and swivel head. Both provide a modelling light with
the appropriate camera. Which one is best? Your
intended usage and the depth of your pockets hold the
answer.
I'm sure there are other differences, but I think
they're the main ones - someone else may be able to
fill in the gaps I've missed.
