Hi All:
I'd like to share with you my rather 'horrible'
experience happened last week, when I was taking photo
for my cousin's wedding.
I started with 4 X Energizer alkaline batteries in
the BP-50, and it was fine for the first 1 half rolls.
After that the camera 'shouted' for low batteries, a
blinking blank battery symbol was shown. I was not
able to fire at all. I thought I've got some bad
batteries, so I changed to another 4 X new Energizer.
And I can fire for another 2+ rolls. But sometimes it
would hang halfway, ie I can focus, but can't release.
I need to refocus again for 1 or 2 more times. So
after the 3rd roll I changed to another 4 X new
Energizer, and this time the problem persist. Whew,
this time I was in deep trouble. I didn't have
someone to assist me this time, and I didn't bring
another body!!!(normally I will always have at least
one friend with me) I know this is a VERY BAD habbit,
but I trusted the 50E very much as it had proven to me
for hundreds of rolls. Luckily, at that time my
cousin was rather tired, and she called for a break...
So I tried with the Duracells (brand new) in my
540EZ, and the problem remains. It's really a bad day
for me, as I was really tired on work, and I didn't
really check my equipments and batteries for this
photo session. I didn't even put one 2CR5 in my
bag!!! Arrgghh, only until I try to look for one, I
realised I've taken that piece for my EOS-100! So I
rushed to a closest photo studio, bought one Duracell
2CR5, and plugged in the camera body (I thought the
BP-50 contact might cause problem too), and a
beautiful full battery symbol was shown, and
everything was back to normal again. I put in the
previous set of Duracells Alkaline AA, and I get a
full battery symbol too, what a miracle! The camera
needed a 'voltage reboot'! Hmm, it seemed like the
body was on Alkaline for too long, and it demanded the
taste of Lithium :-))) After that I used those
Duracell Alkalines for 4 more rolls, and it turned
back to normal, and always gave me a full battery
symbol, which is quite abnormal on my 50E :-) From my
experience, a set of fresh alkalines can last for
about 20 rolls, and only on the first 3 rolls (at
best) I can see the full battery symbol. Then the
remaining 10-12 rolls will have the half blank symbol,
and the rest are with a blinking half blank symbol!
At some point, however, the camera can fire (exposure
was made), but the film wouldn't wind, and the
blinking battery symbol came out again. I soft
pressed the shutter release (for an AF operation), and
it continued the winding. This thing never happened
on my 50E. I know there are a lot of mail regarding
the 50E and BP-50 contact problem, but mine seemed to
be an intermittent power supply problem. I worried
for 2 days after that, waiting for the result.
Luckily, when my cousin brought me all the prints (I
told her where's the right place for developing and
printing, as I went travelling the day after her
wedding), all are properly exposed and focused.
Wheeewww, what a great relief. She was amazed by the
result and sent me tonnes of thanks, especially when
she compared it with the result of her father's F-70 +
Tamron 28-200 :-). However, what I can tell her was,
I just press the shutter release button, and the rest
are done by my very capable equipment :-)
Honestly, the 50E's exposure is dead on, and my EF
optics are very good, even the lowly rated 75-300 mkI
USM... I can clearly see the difference of the Tamron
shot and the 75-300 shot, at similar focal length.
However, I used it only in 75-135mm, which I believed,
is the best range for performance. And to add in
something stunning, even my cousin, with her very
'untrained' eyes, can clearly pick up the shots I made
with the 300 F/4 IS!!! Wow, I think L is really
making a difference here. Hmm, according to her, ALL
SHOTS from that lens are VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL. Now we
got one more complement for our L series optics :-)
O.K., enough for this very long post(and I hope it
wouldn't waste your time). Moral of the story? To
me, always bring a back-up body, and always have
Lithium cells handy even though you have battery pack
and use alkaline to save cost... And the Koday Pro
Image 100 is really good for portraiture.

regards,
Huang Shao Hui
