Dear Jim,

Great!  Thanks for the help. And thanks too, to the others who have 
made suggestions.   I do have manuals, but of course, the 380 manual 
doesn't discuss the Elan 7e, and the Elan 7e manual doesn't mention 
the 380.  However, the E-TTL light does come on and the zoom 
indicator light does change position within the limits of the zoom 
lens I have attached.  And, the 380 does make a racket as I change 
the focal length.  I'll have to get a roll of slide film to finish 
your suggested test.
