I think it all depends on user technique and subject matter.  I usually
chose the metering mode for the subject type, then adjust the exposure
compensation with my thumb based on the lighting present and the lightness
or darkness of the subject.  I do change the metering mode when the overall
situation changes, but not near as often as I do the exposure compensation.
Bottom line though is that if it's something you think will hender your
capabilities or make you miss shots, then perhaps you should chose a
different model.
