Hi everyone,
I bought my first Speedlite yesterday. It's a 550EX and the first thing I
can say is, wow, that's a pretty handsome piece of gear. It's almost bigger
than my EOS 50e.
But I've noticed one strange thing. Once the flash has fully recharged and
the PILOT lamp goes red, it still produces the high-pitched recharging
sound, but in short bits and with rising intervals. Note that the PILOt
never goes off. To make it clear, the sequence is more or less like this:
1. recharging (after a full flash burst) - ca. 8-10 secs
2. silence (ca. 1 sec)
3. 'recharging sound' - 0.5 sec
4. silence (ca. 2 sec)
5. 'recharging sound' - 0.5 sec
...
and so on until the whole thing stablizes and then it's regular, the 0.5 sec
recharging sound followed by about 7-8 secs of silence.
Also, when recharging starts, the sound is not the same throughout the
process. Before it goes 'normal', high-pitched, it sounds like the capacitor
or whatever else is 'getting up speed' - I don't know how to describe it.
I can't say whether what I've described affects my flash exposures, because
I haven't finished taking my test roll yet. Also, I can't say whether it
reduces the number of available full flash bursts. But I hope my description
is fairly clear and you can understand it.
Is the behavior of my 550EX normal or should I take it back to the shop?
Please help.
Maciek
P.S. To give you a fuller picture, I'm using alkaline Energizer batteries to
power the 550EX.
