Karen,

Are you referring to the E-1 hand grip accessory?  It
fits most EOS cameras fitted with a booster, battery
pack or grip.  E.G. to fit on a 630 it requires the
GR10L grip to be fitted.

The reason for this is that the grips etc have an
additional strap lug fitted to them to allow the
attachment of the E-1.  Without that additional lug,
there's nowhere else for the bottom of the strap to
attach.  

I assume it would be the same with any other similar
third party grip strap - although you may be able to
rig up something that attaches to the tripod socket in
lieu of a third strap lug, but I'm not sure how well
that would work.  Maybe the base off an old hammerhead
style flash unit could do it.

I've been tempted to get an E-1 for myself, but I also
use a normal strap, and attaching both at the same
time may prove to be a logistical nightmare!
