I've shot with the Tamron a little bit.  The biggest
problem I have with it is that focus is S-l-o-o-w. 
Contrast and sharpness are a bit weak, too.  I have no
doubt Canon could do a better job with the optics
(albeit at a significatnly higher cost), and USM would
certainly take care of focus speed.
