Subject: AF-assist for Rebel 2000 with 380Ex

Hi,

I am just a beginner to SLR photography, currently trying to make
some meaningful pictures with a affordable EOS300(Rebel2000) body (
accompanied by a EF28-80 III and a EF75-300).
I have a doubt as to whether the 380EX is not intended to be
compatible with the EOS300 body. The problem is that this camera
uses the built-in flash for AF assist light, which works fine for
any or all of the seven focussing points. And the 380EX also has a
built-in AF-assist lamp which, however, works only for the
central focussing point.
So, when I manually choose any of the other points while using the
external flash mounted on the body, it turns out that the AF-assist
doesn't work at all.
So my doubt is, is this the intended behaviour,(the only way out
being to use central focussing point with the AF lock or use manual
focus) or am I missing something really gross here?!

Thanks,
Shoubhik
