Must be big differences in manufacuting from lens to lens.  I had the 70-300IS and it 
was soft.  I was never happy with it at all.  Luckily I unloaded it on e-Bay for only 
about $100 less than I paid for it new.  I went right for the 70-20 2.8L and have not 
looked back once.  The construction was pretty flimsy too.  I guess I was used to the 
metal and glass on the old FD lenses.  I could never extend a FD zoom and have the end 
of the barrel move up and down by pushing it.  Oh well....
